Death
In 1918 an influenza epidemic caused hundreds of deaths in Kitchener-Waterloo. The death of Cecil Linder is correctly reported in the Ontario Vital Statistics, #040-697 for 1918:
Name: Lindner, Cecil Sex: Male Age: 13 yrs, 8 mos Died: Oct 14/[19]18 Born: Milverton, Ont Place: 183 Ahrens St. W., [Kitchener] Burial: Mt Hope Cemetery, [Kitchener] Single Occ: Child Father: Chas. Linder Mother: Maria Eick Cause: Pneumonia Physician: L.A. Pequegnat & H.M. Lackner Undertaker: A. Edwards, Kitchener Reg'd: Oct 14/[19]18 ------------------ Physician's Return Name: Lindner, Cecil Date: Oct 14/[19]18 Cause: Influenza, 1 week Immediate: Pneumonia, 2 days Physician: L.A. Pequegnat 19 Weber St. W., [Kitchener] Oct 14/[19]18
- The father's name is incorrectly given as "Charles". Cecil has a younger brother Charles who would die five days later from the same influenza virus.
However The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday October 16, 1918 (page 5) and The Kitchener News Record printed the following:
MORE VICTIMS OF PNEUMONIA
----- HENRY K. LINDER At the age of 26 years death claimed Henry K. Linder son of Mr. Sam Linder, 183 West Ahrens Street. The deceased who was born in Waterloo died on Saturday from heart failure.
CECIL 1905-1918

- Both papers report the name of 'Henry K.' rather than 'Cecil'.
- And both papers give an age of 26 rather than the correct age of 13.
- The error is repeated by the Telegraph when brother Charles dies within the week, but the Record does get it right then.
Death
Younger brother Charles Linder died shortly after his older brother Cecil. The Ontario Vital Statistics for 1918, #040-736, give some details:
Name: Lindner, Charles Sex: Male Age: 10 years Died: Oct 19/[19]18 Born: Milverton, Ont Place: Isolation Hospital Burial: Mt Hope Cemetery, [Kitchener] Single Occ: Child Father: Samuel Linder Mother: Maria Eick Cause: Influenza Physician: J. McGillawee, 76 King St. W., [Kitchener] Oct 19/[19]18Two brief obituaries were printed when Charles Linder passed away in 1918 in the influenza epidemic of that year. The shorter (and less accurate) was printed in The Daily Telegraph on Saturday October 19, 1918, page 6:

On the same day, Saturday October 1, 1918, page 1:
- The Telegraph misspell the name of Lindner.
- They repeat the error of brother Harry from earlier in the week.
----- CHARLES LINDER ----- Charles, the ten-year-old son of Mr. Sam Linder, 183 West Ahren Street, died at 7.30 o'clock today after an illness of ten days with influenza and pneumonia. Besides the brief-stricken father, two sisters and two brothers (one in France) survive.
The funeral will take place on Monday afternoon from the home to Mr. Hope Cemetery.
